Urban Kulhad (soda fired)
A kulhad is a traditional clay cup used for chai in India—simple, warm, and part of everyday tea rituals. In this work, I reinterpret that form through flameproof clay, creating teaware that moves naturally from the stove to the table.
Tea is part of the daily rhythm in our mixed Indian–Latin American home. Preparing chai together has guided my focus toward functional teaware designed for heat, use, and shared moments.
Some pieces carry carved geometric forms drawn from petroglyph motifs from the Muisca territory in the central highlands of Colombia, historically referred to as “Chibcha hieroglyphs” in early documentation. I first encountered these forms in an archaeological publication in Bogotá, and began translating some of them into clay as a way of weaving that territory into my work.
These vessels bring together two parts of my life: the tea rituals of our home and the Colombian landscape that shaped me.
Suitable for chai, tea, herbal infusions, or simply boiling water—each piece is made to support daily use and quiet moments.
Bringing them into your home adds a sense of story and connection—linking today’s mindful rituals with India’s long-standing tea traditions and the symbolic language that reflects the merging of our own home culture.
Capacity: Approximately 4 oz
Dimensions: Approximately 2 ¼ ” tall 2 ¼ ” wide
Materials: Flameproof clay
Rich exterior glaze and glazed interior.
Creation Method: Wheel-thrown and finished by hand
